All American Prodigy Camp: Houston Award Winners

Over the last three plus years we've had some great players from the City of Houston come and attend my All American Prodigy Camp which has historically been held in Austin.  This past weekend we took the camp on the road to Houston St. Thomas High School.  Under the direction of myself (Max Ivany) & Camp Directors Richard Law & Orin Bailey both of whom coach at St. Thomas we had a total of 45 players in attendance.  I likely planned it a couple of weeks earlier than the desired dates but there was no denying the talent that showed up in the gym this early in the year.  We had 12 players who were 6'5" or better.

One of the reasons the All American Prodigy Camp is so popular is that I don't evaluate off past reputations.  Lots of "name" guys get mad at me because I don't give a free pass and of course lots of new talent get their due if they earn it.  I promote players based on merit.  You earn it, you receive the accolades.  Plain & simple!
Because of conflicts in schedules, some players could not stay for the entire session, thus they were not eligible for award consideration.  These included 2012 G 6'0" Chase Brogna a lights out shooter from Houston St, Thomas, 2013 F 6'7" Kalvin Singletary of Van Vleck who is a bruiser & banger down low & 2013 P 6'11" Anthony Young from Van Vleck, TX who will quickly go from anonymity to a huge amount of publicity as he heads out on the circuit this spring with the Texas D1 Ambassadors group out of Houston.

However, without further ado, let's spotlight the guys who got it done at the camp!-Coach Max Ivany

Texas 4A & 5A Playoff Predictions

As everyone knows this time of year is when I pick the winners of every playoff game at the 4A & 5A level in Texas.  Starting this Monday-Tuesday a total of 64 games will be played in each classification in the first round.  Last year I picked a pretty robust 82% winners.  Some against the grain predictions panned out for me while "sure bets" like Austin Westlake made me look like a donkey.  I was thinking about letting my 4 month old grandson, Julian picking the winners this year over a dancing chicken but I decided that I still had an edge over both of them  :-).  So..Here goes!
There are still a few matchups that have not been updated yet, but should be in order by the late afternoon

TAPPS 5A Playoffs

Houston St. Thomas 51  Argyle Liberty Christian 43  (2 OT)
St. Thomas sports a big three in the Class of 2012; all Division One prospects in 6'9" P Jeremy King, 6'0",  G Chase Brogna & 6'3" G Christian Sanders while Argyle had no players with that kind of name recognition.  Something happened though as the visitors from the DFW area didn't seem to be aware of that.  Proving that there isn't always a connect between having next level prospects and gutty, blue collar high school players it took double overtime before The Eagles finally snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.

This was a game of limited scoring opportunities as both teams played a 2-3 zone and Argyle was in no hurry to just jack up shots when they had their offensive possessions.  I was impressed with the disciple displayed by Liberty Christian and their star player, Senior Eric Heidelmann.  He finished with 21 points & 6 rebounds including five buckets from behind the three point line.  As the first overtime wound down it was looking bleak for S.t Thomas until Christian Sanders hit a clutch three pointer with about a minute left in the game. St. Thomas are usually a sharp shooting bunch bit that was one of only three shots to go down from beyond the arc.  Credit Argyle Liberty for playing hardnosed D.
2012 Chrisitan Sanders helped St. Thomas avoid the upset
In the second overtime, The Eagles switched up defenses and began to scramble, pressuring the ball.  It paid off bg time as Chase Brogna had steals on 3 possessions and salted away 4 free throws to ice the game.  Sanders led with 17 points with 9 of them coming in the OT sessions.  Brogna had 11 & King had 9 points & 7 rebounds.  They will meet Austin St. Michael's next Friday on their home court in what should be a high scroing affair in the TAPPS 5A Regional Final.

Austin St. Michael's  60  El Paso Cathedral 49
As he's done in 90% of St. Michael's games Jake Kocher led the Crusaders to the win
St. Michael's was led by Senior G Jake Kocher (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi) who had 20 points and Senior Austin Burch with 13 points.  Kocher was Austin's leading scorer for the 2nd year in a row.  As he rounds out his prep career he has scored in excess of 2700 points in three season at the varsity level.

High School Roundup 2/12/2011

Game of the Night : Second Baptist vs Westbury Christian

Tonight's battle  featuring the Second Baptist Eagles versus Westbury Christian Wildcats will have a big playoff impact for the winner. These same to teams met in last years state final with Westbury Christian winning the battle.  The game will be played at Westbury Christian so plan on arriving early to the event to get a good seat.
If you haven't seen Anthony Collins 6'0 (2011) or LJ Rose 6'4(2012)  play, you have missed a treat. These pair of lead guards are as good as you can find in the business. Expect a show when watching these two guard battle. Both players a have nice supporting cast around them so the game tonight will be a good one.

High School Round Up- Recap

                                                                    Game Recap

In front of a standing room only crowd and several division one college coaches the St. Pius vs St. Thomas game proved to live up to the hype.  Both teams came out blazing and traded early opening baskets. St. Pius seized the early momentum off a pair threes from Kenny Wells and a deep bomb from Devon Turk. St. Thomas responded with their own run sparked by Andrew Jones pair of threes.

At the end of 1st Qtr ST. Pius 21- St. Thomas HS 18.

The 2nd period both teams settled down and managed to get a few more defensive stops thus the score at halftime ST. Thomas 35-St. Pius 26.
Both teams made a few adjustments at the half and both teams traded shots but not many baskets. Trey Guidry sparked St. Pius with 9pts in the 3rd period and Chase Brogna had 8pts to end the 3rd period  St. Thomas HS 42-St. Pius 41.

In the fourth quarter for ST. Pius Devon Turk had a pair of deep threes  and Trey Guidry had 9pts in the final period, tried  to keep ST. Pius in the hunt. ST. Thomas countered with Jeremy King getting a few put backs, Chase Brogna key baskets, and Ian Hurley icing four key free throws down the stretch to pull out the victory for ST. Thomas.
